Our Marvellous God

Listen to this devotional:
Listen while you read: "Lord I'm Coming Home"1  (Lyrics)

Jeremiah 27:4b-5a – This is what the Lord of Heaven's Armies, the God of Israel, says: With my great strength and powerful arm I made the earth and all its people and every animal. (NLT)

Recently, I attended a lecture by Dr. Joseph Kezele entitled "Creation: The Eyes Have It." He said, "The Lord Jesus certainly packed a huge amount of functionality into something beautiful, and our eyes not only allow us to see the world but help us to reflect the emotions of our inner spirit. They are a hallmark of God's purpose and elegance." I couldn't take notes fast enough for all that he shared, but here are a few fascinating facts.

Our eyes:

  • Our eyebrows were placed on our face to protect our eyes from sweat.
  • Our eyelids protect our eyes from dust and debris. When we blink, it only takes 40/1000 of a second; it's the fastest muscle in our body.
  • When we cry, our tears wash our corneas, cleaning them like we clean a windshield. Those tears contain antimicrobial agents and other compounds that produce a euphoric effect and help us feel better emotionally.

Animal eyes:

  • Reindeer eyes change colour: in winter, they're blue to let in more light; in summer, they're brown to protect from the sun.
  • An owl can't move its eyes, but it can move its head 270° in both directions.
  • Frogs can move each eye 180° for a total 360° range. They have no lower jaw, so they close their eyelids and drop their eyeballs to shove food down their throats!

Dr. Kezele told of the marvellous ways that God created the eyes of humans and land animals to be exactly what is needed for maximum functioning. He then shared the variety of ways that God created sea creatures' eyes: on the sides or tops of their heads or on antennae that swivel; some with multiple "eyes" amassed in one area — the variations seemed endless.

Many scientists declare that all this evolved over time, as creatures adapted to their environment. But we know better: "O Lord, what a variety of things you have made! In wisdom you have made them all. The earth is full of your creatures." (Psalm 104:24 NLT)

We can search the Scriptures and find multiple reasons to praise God for His mighty power in creating not only our eyes, but everything in our world, each with individual characteristics that perfectly suit its needs and function.

Psalm 104:1a,31 – Let all that I am praise the Lord. O Lord my God, how great you are! May the glory of the Lord continue forever! The Lord takes pleasure in all he has made! (NLT)

Read the rest of Psalm 104 for a glorious tribute to God's greatness.

Prayer: "You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For You created all things, and they exist because You created what You pleased." Amen. (Revelation 4:11 NLT)
