The blue crab of the Chesapeake Bay is a formidable creature. For decades, men have sought ways of entrapping this Epicurean delight. The hard outer shell acts as a virtual suit of armour, warding off possible enemy attacks. During its life-cycle, however, the crab sheds its outgrown shell, and, like a medieval knight who has cast off his protective armour, is forced to pass the hours in hiding until its body hardens again.

Paul recognized the vulnerability of man who, like the soft-shelled crab, is easy prey to the world's evils. Paul recommends the following armour: truth for a belt around our waists, righteousness for a breastplate, the good news of peace for shoes, faith for a shield, the helmet of salvation, and finally the sword of the Spirit. Clad in God's armour, we need not look for a hideaway, for we are ready to meet life head on, unafraid.

Prayer: Give us the faith to put on your armour, our Heavenly Father, that we might be witnesses to your mighty power in our lives. Amen.
