When I read this psalm, it reminds me of how the Lord has been my guardian through so much tragedy in my life, including losing my parents at an early age, and suffering from chronic illness. It touches my heart because I am never alone in my troubles, and I do not have to fear anyone or anything. Verse 3 tells me that God performs wonders for those He loves, and He hears them whenever they call — a very important statement. It is good to know that God hears my prayers, my lamentations, and my cries. It makes me free and helps me not to dwell on difficult situations. God shares everything with me. The psalm encourages me to shut out all unnecessary noise, to become quiet, to meditate, and to bring my prayers to God in a truthful spirit.

What touches me the most in this psalm is that David says, "To my heart you are a richer joy than all their corn and new wine." I have also experienced this. No matter what this world has to offer or how many accomplishments and successes come my way, it can never compare to the joy that I feel when God touches my heart and soul. It is simply indescribable — or at least I cannot find the words! When our hearts are filled with the love of God and our spirits meditate on His Word, we feel connected to Him in the closest way. Then, our sleep is and will be peaceful. We will rest in the knowledge that He watches over us and will still be there when the day begins new. This is a very encouraging psalm. God surrounds us: what could possibly be better?

Prayer: God our Father, thank You for the protection which You give to us every day and night. Praise Your holy name, for into our hearts, You bring joy and gladness, which cannot be found in anything else. Our hearts cry out in happiness, and we worship You in all truthfulness. Amen.
