The Smiling Shark

2 Corinthians 4:13 – We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak. (KJV)

Psalm 62:8 – Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. (KJV)

This devotional offers twofold evidence for trusting in God.

Firstly, while lunching with a dear friend one day, we exchanged our experiences in putting our faith in God helping us locate lost articles. When we "give it to God", admitting we cannot locate something without His help, it always turns up. Not always right away, perhaps, but when He knows we need it.

Such was the case with a missing piece to our granddaughter's wooden puzzle, which just happened to be a smiling shark. I had looked and looked for it for several days, emptying her book and toy boxes, moving furniture — all to no avail.

As my granddaughter lives in a condo, there isn't a huge area to search, but still, it didn't turn up.

A week ago, while readying her for a stroll outside, I heard the lock and handle on the door turning. Knowing her parents were at work, I picked her up and looked through the security hole to see a man attempting entry to the condo. Pushing myself against the door, I hollered to get away, that I was calling the police — to no avail. He kept trying and was able to open the door, but thankfully retreated when I told him again that I was calling the police.

The long story short is that while he went on to try other doors, I was able to call the manager and the police. With the involvement of at least nine police, including the canine unit, he was located in the building — only to find out that they could not charge him as he is a resident, and had entered the main door and floors with his key fob. So hopped up on drugs was he, that he was on the wrong floor — several wrong floors, it turned out. This is not a rundown condo building, but a newer one in a reasonable part of the city. It's just that drugs are everywhere and a sign of our times.

Interestingly, I was more offended than scared that he would continue to attempt to enter even through my yelling that I was calling the police.

After he'd been caught, my statement had been written and signed, and things had returned back to normal, I sat on the couch to call our daughter and son-in-law at work to let them know what had transpired.

Then, there, peeking out from under the chair across from me, while I was on the phone, was the smiling shark piece. It made me smile too, that He chose that moment to reveal it to me, for I had moved that chair several times looking for it — though always from the other side.

Think what you will; say what you think: I know that God was with me throughout the ordeal, and presented me with the lost piece at a time when He knew it would be most appreciated.

It is often in difficult times that we find it the most difficult to keep the faith, to keep that trust in Him. Whether it is asking His help in finding something so seemingly insignificant as a piece to a puzzle, or trusting that He will see us through the more important things in life, we need to keep that faith, and rely on that trust: Give it to God and He will see us through.

Prayer: Good and gracious God, we offer our thanks to You for Your presence in our time of need. May we put our trust and faith in You always. In Your name we pray and give thanks for this day. Amen.
