Good Versus Evil

At the tender age of seven years, I was left behind with my grandmother when my mother emigrated overseas. I felt unprotected, and the danger of being harmed by evil people was never far from me. Though no harm came to me, I became distrustful, fearful, and lost, without my mother's presence and protection. The fear of being abandoned was always with me, and my feelings of insecurity and vulnerability stayed with me for a long time. Fortunately, after accepting Jesus into my life, I found comfort in knowing that Jesus loved me and that He would never leave me or forsake me. I rejoined my mother before my thirteenth birthday, and by God's grace and mercy, I have had a beautiful, fulfilling life.

James 4:7 – Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (NIV)

Satan is the evil one who tempted me to became distrustful and fearful. He is the soul destroyer; whenever he is given the opportunity, he will even take believers in Christ Jesus with him into the valley of darkness. The Word of God is our protection:

Psalm 23:4 – Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (NIV)

The evil one often slips in when we are at our weakest point. But the Lord Jesus Christ, our Protector and Saviour, is on duty full-time. Whatever trials we face, we have nothing to fear from Satan if we know the Lord Jesus Christ. Believing in our heavenly Father and living by His Word are crucial.

Ephesians 6:10-11 – Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. (NIV)

Satan, the evil one, must not be allowed to gain a foothold in our lives because he will create havoc in them. We must put on the armour of God every single day.

1 Peter 5:8-9 – Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings. (NIV)

What are you doing to protect yourself from the evil one?

Prayer: Our Father in heaven, we praise Your holy name. Help us to stay strong in our faith. Keep us safe from the evil one by helping us to stay alert. Thank You, Holy Spirit, for always interceding for each of us when we call upon the holy name of Jesus. Amen.

Thank you, Yvonne, for such a meaningful devotional today. I hope we will hear from you again soon.

Problems come and it is at this time we call on Jesus for help – Hence problems bring us closer to God.

Thank you, Yvonne, for sharing your story. This statement is so true: Satan, the evil one, must not be allowed to gain a foothold in our lives because he will create havoc in them. We must put on the armour of God every single day.

Thanks, Yvonne, for sharing about the happenings in the early days of your life. Thankfully your life was better once you were reunited with your Mom and our loving Lord was prominent in your daily life. Blessings for writing.

Thank you, Yvonne, for sharing your heart with so many. I love the way you backed up everything with scripture. I’m sorry that you experienced that sense of abandonment, but I can see how God has used that experience to make you sensitive to the experiences of others…you are a gift to many!
    Blessings!

Hi Yvonne, I am so happy that you were eventually reunited with your mother. God bless your grandmother for her willingness to step in during that time. It must have been a difficult time for you all but once again we see the care and faithfulness of God, and you now probably have a soft spot in your heart to be able to minister to others in a very way. Thank you, Jesus, Amen.

Thank you, Yvonne for your timely question: What are you doing to protect yourself from the evil one?
I find that the evil one is constantly trying to divert me away from my restful trust in the Lord. Thus, this morning I have been meditating on Jesus’ promise: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

    Dear Yvonne,
Thanks for the wonderful devotional this morning. It is so great knowing such a loving Heavenly Father God and His Son, Jesus, who heals all of our lives in so many ways. And gives us His Spirit to dwell within and never leaves us. Years ago we used to sing,
I’ll never be lonely again….. since I opened up my heart’s door to Him.
May God continue to bless you as you share His love through your writing.

    Good morning, Yvonne,
I definitely understand better who a child might feel when their parent leaves them behind in the hopes of gaining a better future for them in the years to come. I know this is still done often today so it opened my eyes to feel how the child might feel. I am pleased that it all worked out well for you and you had a “beautiful, fulfilling life” and Jesus is part of it.
Thank you for sharing your experience and helping us all to remember to not let the devil tempt us in our faith. Blessings.

    Great Devotional!
My mother lost a parent, her Dad at 8.
It’s a tough situation, and I remember schoolmates who also lost parents.
My sister did not see Dad for almost a year, when he went from UK to Canada to emigrate, when she was 3 years old. She and Mom were in Mom’s home town at that time, and had care and comfort of Mom’s kin.
When I was under 3, my Dad had a major heart attack, and I was at the hospital; never thought much of being separated; grateful I had 4 more decades with my Dad.

    Good afternoon, Yvonne,
Thank you so much for this devotional.
I have been reading a book by the Christian Counsellor David Powlison about spiritual warfare, Safe and Sound: Standing firm in Spiritual Battles.
He reminds us that Jesus is the armour. He is our salvation. Faith in him keeps us strong, Jesus wears the shoes of peace, and so on. I particularly like the part where he says Jesus’ righteousness protects us because it is the opposite of hate and pride and unbelief which tears us and others apart.
Looking forward to your next devotional.

Thank you, Yvonne, for your devotional and its message.
    Continued blessings on you.

    Hello Yvonne,
I just read your devotional today which really resonated with me. I am well aware that the devil is real and prowling around to create havoc in our lives. Thanks be to God that we can always go to Him with our problems, and, with thanksgiving, he will and does give us the peace that passes all understanding.
May God bless you, as I look forward to reading more of your devotionals through PresbyCan.
