Take A Number

Listen to this devotional:
Listen while you read: "Hail The Day That Sees Him Rise"1  (Lyrics)

Have you ever apologized to God for bringing your small requests? I know that I have! When I hear of so much suffering, how can I ask God to take away my headache? How can I ask for trivial things when other people are dealing with starvation, plagues, and bombardment? There is always someone who needs the Lord's attention more than I do, so I am glad that I am not put on a waiting list. I don't hear Him say, "Go ahead, take a number, and I will get to you after I take care of the really big stuff." Where would even my most desperate prayers place in importance in light of the world's problems? Can you imagine if He said, "Take a number", and it read, "1,536,785,309"? Wow! I can get shook up if I have ten ahead of me at the driving license facility.

As I read my Bible, there are all kinds of requests for help and healing by Jesus. I see the woman who could only touch the edge of his robe for healing because there were so many people ahead of her, but that was all it took. She was healed! We read of all the blind who had their sight restored, lepers who were cleansed, and the demon-possessed who were rescued from their tormentors. All healed! How can some of my requests even compare to problems of this magnitude? Don't get me wrong, I have some large-sized requests and long for answers, but I also have those not-so-big requests as well. Fortunately, we have a God Who cares about them all. There are no lines when we try to get to the Lord. We don't have to take a number and wait for Him to listen. We don't have to apologize for talking to our Father about anything, even small things.

As a mother, I am blessed to have my children come to me, even as adults, asking me to pray for their needs. Sometimes, their problems are small, and sometimes they are huge. Sometimes, they are in need of healing and covet my prayers, but sometimes, encouragement is all they need. I want them to see that my arms are always open, as well as my heart, because I am their mom, and there is no higher privilege. Our heavenly Father also waits with open arms and a loving heart. He hears His children and is anxious to talk with us. He longs to put us first on the list with no waiting!

Luke 11:9-10 – So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. (NIV)

Prayer: Lord, help us never to fail to ask anything from You, our heavenly Father, no matter how large or small. May we seek You, that we may find Your will. May we knock, that the door to Your abundance may be opened. In Jesus' name, we ask this, that it may be given to us. Amen.

Thank you, Jeanie. I have experienced several answers to “small” needs recently and am always surprised when the answers come. Praise God, He doesn’t ask us to “take a number”.

Hello Jeanie, I agree it is a blessing knowing we can come to God whenever, wherever, and with whatever He always listens, hears, and cares. Thank you very much for sharing today!

Thank you, Jeanie, for another of your very encouraging devotionals. Yes, we are so fortunate that our loving Lord is ever present to hear our call and respond at the right time. We need be so thankful at all times for His care. Blessings for these writings you prepare.

Great article for today. I think we have all felt this way from time to time. Perhaps we are trying to bring God down to a more human level to feel closer to Him. Of course we should not do this but rather accept Him for who he is and for what he does. I think this would be a great topic for group discussion.

Great start to the day, Jeanie! A good laugh at the scenario you described. You obviously have an open relationship with your family… wonderful that they recognize the power of prayer and bring their requests to you.
    Have a really blessed day!

    Dear Jeanie,
This is an encouraging message. I think most of us struggle with this at times. And if it keeps us from praying, then it is the enemy who wins, as we limit our relations with God. You described it beautifully as you spoke of you as a mother, with your children: as a mother, so with our Father!
    Blessings!

    Hi Jeanie,
Thanks for today’s lovely devotional. My mother died several years ago. Today would have been her 100th birthday. How precious are our good memories.
Keep up your good work as a caring, approachable mother. Also, I hope you will continue to write thoughtful and helpful devotionals.
    With appreciation.

    Hi Jeanie,
I had a laugh with your idea of “taking a number” in order to speak to God. It definitely hit the nail on the head to remind us that God is always there for us no matter what time or wherever we are. It definitely emphasizes the point that God wants to hear from us and to share our prayers, thoughts, and wishes.
Thanks for a clever way of making an important point about God’s availability to all of us. Blessings.

Amen and amen! Thanks for this encouraging devotional. Blessings.
