1 Thessalonians 5:5a – You are all sons of the light. (NIV)

Being a writer, I have learned that it is vital to have a pen and a pad of paper or some sort of audio recording device readily available to save thoughts and ideas that come to mind. This is especially true at night. Very often in the wee hours of the night, devotional ideas will begin to flow. Sadly, I have lost many thoughts and ideas by thinking, "Oh, I won't forget that. I will jot that down first thing in the morning." When morning comes, I am unable to recall what it was that I was supposed to jot down.

Now, so that I do not lose any more thoughts or ideas that come to me in the middle of the night, I use my iPhone to write it down. Thankfully, the light from the iPhone shining in the bed doesn't awaken my husband, Marcelo.

There is, however, a far more important light that shines in darkness, and that is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ.

John 8:12 – When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." (NIV)

The light that shines in darkness now lives in the redeemed — those of us whose sins are forgiven, having been washed in the precious blood of Jesus Christ. With the Holy Spirit now living in us as our power source, Jesus tells us that we have become light shining in darkness.

Matthew 5:14a,16 – You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (NIV)

As we learn more through the Word of God about how Jesus lived, walked, talked, and responded to others, we can make the choice not only to be hearers of the Word but also doers. Then, Jesus' light in us shines even more brightly to awaken those near us who are spiritually asleep.

If you know Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, then I am sure that you would agree that it is such a joy to be given the privilege of being God's light to a darkened world.

If you do not know Jesus as your Saviour yet, why delay any longer? You may wish to pray a prayer something like this: "Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and that You are the only One Who can save me. I believe that You died to forgive my sins, that You were buried, and that You rose again the third day. Please save me, Lord. Amen."

Prayer: Father God, thank You for anyone who desired to come out of darkness and into Your light, and prayed the prayer of salvation today. Thank You for allowing us, Your children, to be light shining in darkness to help lead others to Jesus, the light of the world. Amen.
