One of the privileges of living in Ottawa, Canada, is attending special live events, one being the annual Remembrance Day memorial parade and service. A large crowd surrounds the National War Memorial, filling the sidewalks on Elgin and Wellington Streets. What excitement to see the marching military bands, to hear the skirl of the bagpipes, and to honour the veterans with applause! Everyone looks forward to seeing the Snowbirds squadron zooming overhead, the boom of the guns' salute, and the children of the Canadian Centennial Choir singing "In Flanders Fields". When we attend, we honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country's freedom and peace, and vow never to forget.

They fought for a future world of peace, but the Lord has promised us more than a peaceful future; He has promised eternal life!

1 John 2:25-27 – And this is the promise that He has promised us — eternal life. These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you. But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. (NKJV)

The apostle John teaches us that when God's truth lives in us, then so does He, ensuring a real promise of eternal life. It doesn't mean just living for eternity when we die; it begins now! The new life in Christ, staying constantly in Him, is the guarantee of confidence with God.

How do we continue in the truth? His anointing and our abiding in the Father and Son do this, and we have the Holy Spirit in us to enable us. The anointing from the Lord directs us in the truth, one step at a time, and confirms it in our hearts. So, we now have the ability to discern the truth and to recognize it in true Christian teachers, like John.

Do you recognize God's anointing in your own life? It will lead you ever closer to Jesus. It is right to recognize the sacrifices made in the past, and honour our veterans and the fallen, but we look ahead to a better future of eternal life as we continue constantly in our Lord and Saviour.

Prayer: Thank You, dear Lord, that when Your truth lives in us, You live in us, too. You have given us a promise, which is real. Give us the grace always to be confident in You. Amen.
