Love will always compel us to do something good for God.

Matthew 25:36 – I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. (NIV)

The Pastoral Care Ministry in our congregation provides spiritual care to the families in our church and community who are struggling with health issues, among other things. We look after God's people in love, compassion, respect, and unity. We visit the folks who are shut-in and the sick and the elderly in long-term care homes. We provide them with emotional support and words of encouragement. We pray for them in situations where they have lost family members or friends, or when they are facing hospitalizations and surgeries. It is especially rewarding to share in their gratitude to God after a successful recovery from surgery!

Some people greatly enjoy serving others, and God expects nothing less from us, "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Mark 10:45 NIV)

Philippians 2:3-4 – Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. (NIV)

Service and serving are from God, to do His work here on earth.

Colossians 3:23-24 – Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. (NIV)

When individually we serve others — something that should give us personal joy and pleasure — we are in fact serving God. What a privilege it is to serve not only God but our families, friends, and the people in our congregations and in our communities!

1 Peter 4:10,11b – Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. (NIV)

If your calling is giving to the poor, then give generously and lovingly. If your calling is looking after the helpless, the needy, and the vulnerable people in our society, then you should do it to the glory of Christ Jesus. Helping our brothers and sisters pleases God!

Consider this: why not ask God to show you how you can make a difference in someone else's life today? Let us use the gift of time with which He has so richly blessed us.

Prayer: O God, You placed us here on this earth to serve and to help each other. Grant us Your grace to do Your work lovingly and willingly, because it is the right thing to do. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
