Recently, I started to cook myself a breakfast of fried eggs on toast when I realized that one of the main ingredients was missing: eggs. I had one from the old carton in the refrigerator, but where were the rest of the eggs?

The previous day, I had bought some more. After moving everything about in the refrigerator to check that I had not missed them hiding behind some fruit and vegetables, they were nowhere to be seen. Grrr!

Being older, I questioned myself: Had I actually bought the eggs? Fortunately, for once, I had a clear recollection of picking up the eggs and putting them in the trolley. I remembered there being nothing left in the trolley after loading the shopping into the car — a plus for me — so they had to be somewhere.

Then, I remembered that the shopping had spilled over into the boot of the car when I had made a quick turn from the supermarket onto the main road. Apparently when repacking the bags, I was not at my most attentive, having wilted in the heat of the day and the relentlessness of the day's tasks that I had already performed. For when I went and checked out the boot of the car, there sat the wayward egg box, perched in the side netting of the boot pocket.

Breakfast cooked and eaten — much to the dog's disgust at not receiving any — I realized that there was a message waiting for me from the Lord. It seems that I am a slow learner, as God repeatedly highlights my need of seeking Him, not doubting, and keeping Him centred in my life.

Just as my eggs were thrown out of the shopping bag by my hasty turn into the main road the previous day, my rushing off amidst my doing thrusts God's influence to the sidelines of my life. That was not going to help when I wanted to commune with Him in a hurry, only to find a scantiness of God's influence in my doing and living.

Praise God that He is always watching over us! When we look for it, we will find His influence in the remembrance of what He has already done for us, as we reflect on His love for us and see it in His Word.

Prayer: Lord, we thank You that we can trust in Your grace and provision, which has already served as a signpost in our walk with You into the day ahead. As we trust in Jesus, provide within us the resources for what happens in the future, good or bad. In Your name, we pray, Jesus — the name above all names. Amen.
