Sharon Lundquist and I married brothers and have been dear friends for most of our adult lives. I sometimes say that we are sisters-in-love as well as sisters-in-law. For many years, we have lived in the same greater metropolitan area, but we used to see each other only a few times a year. Then, just over two years ago, I moved 20 miles across town to be closer to my daughter's family. Coincidentally, I now also live only about five miles from Sharon, and we greatly enjoy meeting for coffee once every week or two.

Our stimulating coffee conversations cover a wide range of topics: world affairs, politics, favourite books, hobbies, our families, and the wonders in the world all around us. We also share a common interest in writing, and we both periodically write PresbyCan devotionals.

The heart and centre of our relationship is not only our family connection and common interests, but our common bond in the Lord. In addition to our sisterly ties, our bond of Christian faith has given us a firm foundation for our lasting friendship because we are also sisters in the Lord. We often speak of God's work in our lives and of His faithfulness to us as we rely on Him. As these conversations unfold, they express our trust and hope in our heavenly Father, and our words bring Him praise. This pleases Him, and He makes note of it.

Malachi 3:16 – Then those who feared and loved the Lord spoke often of him to each other. And he had a Book of Remembrance drawn up in which he recorded the names of those who feared him and loved to think about him. (TLB)

I have long loved this verse, and the part about my name being recorded in His Book of Remembrance when I make Him an important part of my life is a great comfort and encouragement. The Bible also mentions the Book of Life. Whether it is the same book or a different one, I also know that God knew from eternity past that my name would be written in it:

Psalm 139:16 – You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. (NLT)

Not only am I assured of my eternal future, but I know that He takes note of my actions here on my earthly journey.

May our daily conversations with fellow believers honour Him as we talk of His mercy to us and the hope that we have in troubled times. His place in the centre of our lives is worth talking about!

Prayer: "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to You, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer." Amen. (Psalm 19:14 NLT)
