Luke 2:13-14,16 – And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. (KJV)

A man on a bicycle once had an issue with another man who was with his car at a fuel station. The man with his car angrily asked, "Do you know who I am?" The other man replied, "Yes!" Then he squatted as he scooped sand from the floor and said, "This is what you are: dust!"

The shepherds, after seeing the hosts of angels, surprisingly met the newly born Christ in a manger, a place where animals eat their food. His humble arrival was like the story of a victorious king coming back from war. The whole kingdom was agog, and the peasants were excited, for they would see the king. A banquet like no other had been prepared, the candles had been lit, and freshly plucked roses filled the street. But the king, the greatest man of war, passed through the servant quarters dressed in plain clothes, silent and unannounced.

Christmas should be a time when we remember the humility of Christ. Love begets sacrifice, and with sacrifice there is humility. He wasn't born in the palace, nor in a temple or a mansion, but in an unknown place. His life was one of continual humility. He was poor in spirit.

Zechariah 9:9 – Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass. (KJV)

Ever humble, Jesus rode into Jerusalem, not on a war horse, but on an ass. The nature of Christ is one of humility that commands authority. He was received like a king. At the manger, He received gifts from wise and great men.

When we are humble, wherever we are, we will shine like the morning sun.

Do we look down on others? Have we forgotten that we are just dust sustained by a single breath and bought by His precious blood? It's time to go back to the manger; it is a place of humility.

Prayer: Dearest Father, greatest Redeemer, give us the grace to be humble, and at every moment, to remember the humility of Christ. Amen.
