Psalm 119:105 – Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (NKJV)

Because of my previous experience in raising pigeons, I have a real eye for them, and love having them around. We have a bird feeder behind our house, so, when one day a pigeon showed up, we were thrilled. We kept hoping that more would come, and sure enough, they did. Now, early in the morning, as soon as the feed is out, they arrive, almost without fail. It appears that the word has spread. We have counted as many as seven at one time. They seem to know the time of day. They have a routine, and they show up right on schedule for their daily nourishment.

Most of us have routines as well, with regular times to get up, eat, go to work, and do what needs to be done. More importantly, many of us have daily Bible routines, which are meaningful to us, and like our pigeons, we get our daily spiritual nourishment. Many of us follow a regular Bible reading plan. There are more than five thousand of us who read the PresbyCan Daily Devotional every day. Various church organizations and denominations put out numerous devotional booklets, which people all over the world read on a regular basis.

The people of Israel were told to be faithful to the laws which Moses had received from God, words which can be applied to our devotional and worship time.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 – And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. (NKJV)

In a letter to his young friend, Timothy, Paul tells him how important Scripture is:

2 Timothy 3:14-15 – But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation which is in Christ Jesus. (NKJV)

Let us take seriously Paul's recommendation of the Scriptures. The Word of God is powerful, like a two-edged sword, and it is important that we know what it says and what it can do. Let us make sure to go to it daily, like the pigeons go to the feeder, for our daily nourishment.

Prayer: Our Father in heaven, we thank You for Your Word passed on from generation to generation, and for those who translated the Scriptures into languages that we can understand. Grant us an insatiable desire to read these words of truth. We offer this prayer in Jesus' name. Amen.
