Ephesians 5:8 – For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light. (KJV)

I'm sure many of us can remember stepping into a dark movie theatre from the bright daylight. We were stopped in our tracks because of the contrast between the light and the dark. I remember having popcorn accidentally dumped on me because a person couldn't see where he was going. I learned to wait until an usher came to use his small flashlight as he seated us, or to wait until my eyes adjusted so that we could see tiny red lights at the beginning of each row.

In the darkness, we always need some light to see where we are going. Walking in the darkness of a movie theatre is not a life-or-death experience, but walking in the darkness of sin is a death sentence. Christ has offered us His light, His life, that we may accept Him, repent of our sins, and live in His light.

According to the good news of the gospel, the most profound decision that we will ever make is to step from the darkness of sin into the light of Christ's righteousness. As we do so, we take a step of faith from the familiarity of the world that we know into the unfamiliarity of God's spiritual world that we are entering. Jesus rescues us from the chaos of sin's darkness with a salvation passport that gives us permission to enter the newly found security of spiritual peace with God the Father. What a journey that we take in God's light!

As we grow in the basics of God's Word, called "the milk of the Word", we mature toward the deeper teachings, called "the meat of the Word". All the while, we are moving from the darkness of this world to the light of Christ. Like children, we learn to listen and to read God's Word. We can develop and use our spiritual muscles to maintain our balance. Sometimes, we Christians might take steps backwards, but we can focus on Christ to steady ourselves and move forward again to gain surety and confidence in the promises of God.

Let's examine our own journey into spiritual light and growth, to know where we are. Are we crawling, taking wobbly steps, stumbling, or walking as receivers of the basics? Are we stalled, or even going backwards? Christ's hand is always reaching out to help us up. Let's begin to grow and mature even more deeply. Once we say goodbye to the darkness of sin and hello to the light of the Holy Spirit, God empowers us to go forward. Christ is with us and always has God's best interests in mind for us.

Prayer: Dear Father, we thank You for the gift of salvation, where Christ's light leads us out of darkness. How caring You are to pick us up when we stumble and to strengthen us to go forward. Amen.
