Recently, I've become acquainted with a woman who is rapidly losing her eyesight. She once had full sight, but as the years have advanced, her vision has declined, until now all that she can perceive is brightness and shadow. Her white cane, tipped with red, is her guide as she finds the edges of her pathway using the tip of the cane and then trusts in that feedback. Being a believer in Jesus, she has great and growing insight. She prays that God will continue to show her ways to manage her disability, and she stays hopeful and thankful for answers to these prayers.

2 Corinthians 5:7 – We live by faith, not by sight. (NIV)

Recently, I read the classic entitled Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan. The journey of the main character, Christian, to the Celestial City, is one full of pitfalls and dangers. Christian's travelling companions, Faithful and Hopeful, advise him along the way. So, too, today, we can encounter scary obstacles and have difficulty finding our way or sorting out fact from lies. We need a guide through dark pathways when we cannot see ahead.

Psalm 119:105 – Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. (NIV)

Hebrews 11:1 – Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. (NIV)

I watch my blind acquaintance make her careful way in the space between the curb and the inside edge of the sidewalk where her cane taps, and I see that she walks "in faith", believing what she knows and can trust, always taking a step at a time to reach her destination. Similarly, I want to walk my own pilgrim journey in the space between, on one side, what the light of God's Word teaches me that I can know and believe about God because of His Son, Jesus Christ, and on the other side, what I do not and cannot know of Him because I am a mere mortal.

Colossians 1:15 – [Christ] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. (NIV)

1 Corinthians 13:12 – For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. (KJV)

Let us look forward in faith for the moment when we will at last behold the face of Him Who loved us and gave Himself for us on the cross, and Who rose again to justify us before His Father. It is He Who faithfully leads us and guides us all the way to that Celestial City.

Prayer: Our Father God, You have revealed Yourself to us through Your Son, our Lord Jesus. You have given us the light through Your Word. You have given us Your Holy Spirit. You have given us faith and glorious hope to behold You at last in Your glory. We have all that we need to navigate as we journey through life. Thank You for giving us this living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Help us to trust only in You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
