1 Timothy 6:15b-16 – The Lord of lords who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen. (NIV)

Are you ever amazed or surprised at what light reveals to your human eye? There is a small glass prism that sits on my kitchen windowsill. Sometimes, when the afternoon sunlight hits the prism just right, the bending of the light results in a beautiful display of the colours of the light which my eye can perceive.

During a recent visit to an excellent science museum, I was shown the iridescent colours on a moth that could be seen by my human eye only because they were revealed by an ultraviolet light. Without this "black light" shining, the moth could hide in the dark and not be seen by me. Minerals in rocks are also revealed by the same black light. Our Creator has given to our eyes the ability to see just what we need to see. Others in His creation are able to perceive things that our human eyes cannot see because their eyesight is sensitive to a different portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Our Creator gives to their perception what they need for their life and survival.

Matthew 5:16 – In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (NIV)

Acts 13:47 – For this is what the Lord has commanded us: "I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth." (NIV)

Afternoon light rays shining through narrow slits of venetian blinds were fascinating to me when I was a small child. When I was supposed to be napping on my grandmother's bed, I instead enjoyed singing the Sunday School song about sunbeams. There was a refrain, "Jesus wants me for a sunbeam, to shine for Him each day", and I wondered how that could be. Since then, I have come to realize that the light of God is the source of the beauty within the ones who have opened their hearts and lives to the Light of the world, Jesus Christ. That light illuminates the dark places and reveals beauty of life previously unseen and unimagined.

Let us endeavour to be godly prisms that make visible the beautiful sunbeams of God's love, so that others will see them, too.

John 1:4 – In him was life, and that life was the light of men. (NIV)

Prayer: Our Father and Creator of light, thank You for the gift of perception. Thank You for revealing Yourself to us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You for giving us the light of salvation through Your Holy Spirit. Use us as Your prisms and shine Your light through our lives for Your glory. Amen.
