Psalm 48:14 – For this God is our God for ever and ever; he will be our guide even to the end. (NIV)

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. (NIV)

After attending a gathering in a remote area on the other side of the city from where I live, it was time for me to drive home. I was alone, and it was late at night. I was in an unfamiliar area. Following a sign that directed me toward the freeway entrance, I was soon travelling quickly. It was a relief to think that I was headed home. Then, a sudden, alarming thought flooded my mind as I realized that I was headed in the opposite direction to what I needed to be going! I had been disoriented and had chosen the wrong highway entrance that headed me north instead of south. It seemed wise to take the very next exit ramp to get turned around. However, it took me to a very unfamiliar area with no signs to guide me, and there was no obvious way to get back onto the highway. Lost and confused, I pulled over and asked the Lord to show me the way home. Soon, I saw a sign for a street name that I recognized, which would eventually bring me back to the other side of town, although it would take more time. I felt confident that if I stayed on this known road, it would lead me home. This experience has stayed with me, reminding me to ask for God's guidance daily in my life and for faith always to trust Him.

Today, we have GPS tools and phone apps to help us to plan our road trips. They can help as long as they have power. But in our daily-life journeys of decisions and relationships, we need an all-powerful, everlasting, and reliable Guide. Without assistance to find our way, we may wander and waste precious time in our lives.

Let us trust our Guide, our Good Shepherd, to give us direction, to keep us from wandering, and to lead us through every situation. We've been given God's Word to be our travel guide and road atlas. I'm reminded of some phrases from a 1984 hymn based on Psalm 119:105.

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet
And a light unto my path
When I feel afraid
Think I've lost my way
Still you're there right beside me
Nothing will I fear
As long as you are near
Please be near me to the end
I will not forget
Your love for me and yet
Jesus be my guide
Hold me to your side
And I will love you to the end
       – Amy Grant

Prayer: Thank You, our loving Lord, for being the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and for Your holy Word to light our way as we go through life. Help us always to seek Your guidance and to follow Your leading day by day. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
