Psalm 139:1-4 – O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord. (NIV)

Fortunately for me, the lock on the outside of the laundry room door is high enough that my two little granddaughters can't yet reach it, because if they could lock it, I couldn't get out! They love nothing better than to run and shut the door behind me when I am busy sorting the laundry into piles to be washed. And why are they shutting the door behind me? Because they think that this gives them an opportunity to get into something that they know that they are not supposed to be getting into and that I won't know or hear them getting into it.

What a laugh! Every time it happens, I chuckle to myself at their naïve and childish thinking. I know where they are, and I almost always know what it is they are doing, too.

Yet, how often do we do the same sort of thing to God. We try to shut Him out of the areas of our lives that we don't want Him to know about, because we know that we shouldn't be doing them, but we want to do them anyway. How naïve and childish this type of thinking and behaviour is for the child of God! Today's passage makes it abundantly clear that we can't shut the laundry room door on God. We can't lock Him out of our lives, no matter how hard we try, for He knows where we are and what we are doing, no matter what.

So today, let's act like grown-up Christians in all that we do and think and say. Let's keep the door of communication open between ourselves and God, allowing Him to keep us doing the work of His kingdom in every area of our lives, not only for His sake, but especially for our own.

Prayer: Father God, how You must chuckle at much of Your children's foolishness. Help us today to be wise children of light who are guided and directed by Your goodness and love in everything that we do and say, that no desire of darkness may dwell within us. In Christ's name, we pray. Amen.
