Many find the book of Psalms in the Bible to be a source of comfort and encouragement. In fact, it is probably the most widely read book of the Bible. Jesus quoted from the Psalms more often than any other Scripture.

The Psalms express the deepest feelings of the hearts of those who wrote them, whether they were complaining or praising God — drawing those who read them closer to God and giving them peace.

In one of our Bible studies, we were encouraged to write our own psalm. This is what I wrote:

For as long as I can remember,
God has been a part of my life.
I will praise Him forever and ever,
Because He has been so faithful to me.
My God is forever faithful.

He gives me strength when I am weak,
He comforts me when I am sad.
He speaks to me through His Word,
He rescues me from my sinful ways.
My God is forever faithful.

He meets my every need,
My God is great and worthy to be praised.
There is none like Him,
As long as I live, I will praise my God.
My God is forever faithful.

He is the One Who formed me in my mother's womb,
He is the One Who has called me
Out of darkness into His marvellous light.
He is the One Who will never leave me nor forsake me,
He is the One in Whom I put my trust.
My God is forever faithful.

My God is full of compassion,
His mercy endures forever.
How great and awesome is His love
For such a one as me.
My God is forever faithful.

Colossians 3:16 – Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. (NLT)

Ephesians 5:18b-19 – Be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. (NLT)

"The more deeply we grow into the psalms and the more often we pray them as our own, the more simple and rich will our prayer become." – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

"The most valuable thing the Psalms do for me is to express the same delight in God which made David dance." – C.S. Lewis

Perhaps you would like to write your own psalm?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You so much for Your Word and how it speaks to us, offering us comfort and encouragement, and showing us how to praise You for Who You are and for all the ways that You are working in our lives. Thank You that You hear us when we call out to You in difficult circumstances. Thank You that we can speak to You in psalms of praise. Thank You that You are forever faithful. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
