1 John 3:16a – This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. (NIV)

My husband John and I farmed for many years. Each summer, we grew a huge garden. We had a small greenhouse to start some vegetables early. I loved to be out in the garden to weed and watch things grow. Seeds were planted and patience was needed to see what sprouted. As caretaker of the garden, I had to get rid of weeds that can choke out the vegetables. We ate very well, and we always had plenty to give away to family, friends, neighbours, and the needy.

I learned many spiritual lessons in my garden. One thing is that farming is a profession that is really dependent on the goodness of God. The growth of crops needs good weather with a balance of sun, water, and length of season.

Another thing is that no matter what is planted, the seed must give up its life to produce a harvest. As disciples of Christ, it is important to die to our old self.

John 12:24 – I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies it produces many seeds. (NIV)

A third thing is that words, either spoken or written, can be like seeds.

James 3:18 – Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness. (NIV)

These days, it is very easy to criticize those who are trying to keep us safe and well. Most days, we talk to neighbours, friends, and family via social media. Do we watch what we say, or do we find fault to the point of influencing wrong thoughts in the listener?

May our tongues be pure in speech and encourage family, neighbours, and friends. May God help us to sow peace in the midst of turmoil so that we may be an encouragement to others, with words that reap the benefits of love and righteousness in our homes, communities, and beyond. May God help us all to be an influence for right living in the ones with whom we come in contact.

Prayer: Our heavenly Father, we bow in Your presence to ask that we would allow You to control our tongues to sow peace. May we use words of encouragement. Help our faith to stay strong as we live through our country's present turmoil. Strengthen us through the living hope found in Jesus Christ. Amen.
