Matthew 7:7 – Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. (NIV)

During the fall, huckleberries were ripe for the picking in the shelter of the tall redwood trees. Our family picked fruit and took full buckets to a larger container at a nearby log landing where my two-year-old brother played in his playpen. At the last deposit of berries, we discovered that he had reached them. Everything was stained with purple juice, from his head to his bright white leather toddler shoes. His little fists raised high full of berries, he smiled joyfully and said victoriously, "I got it!" We laughed at our baby brother who was so happy with his bounty.

The little guy set out to get those berries that should have been out of his reach. But he was focused. He strained and reached to get a finger hold on the container. He struggled as he pulled, to move either the container or the playpen closer. Then he enjoyed the fruit, all over his body.

Think how delighted our Father in heaven would be if we concentrated our energy into drawing near to Him as my brother did to the berries.

Prayer is the key to heaven. Scripture promises that if we ask, seek, and knock, the door will be opened, and we will receive. Jesus is a gift to us by God the Father. We don't even have to work for it. We just have to turn toward Jesus. We can take lessons from a small child. How many of us are willing to focus and take action as my little brother did?

Prayer: Dear Lord, set our hearts and minds to know You better. May Your Holy Spirit fill us with Your presence so that we have the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ to live our lives. May we rejoice and say, "I got it!" Amen.
