1 Corinthians 3:1 – Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly — mere infants in Christ. (NIV)

My grandfather made a shelf to go above my bed to hold my tiny collection of Golden Books and four Storybook dolls. In the fourth grade, I earned a little money here and there. With it, I bought my first Bible. I was so proud of it, and I set it on the shelf with my storybooks. I thought about this far-away God as a character in one of my books, because I hadn't yet learned the whole connection between God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit that would make Him personal to me.

I was a "mere infant in Christ". At that young age, I believed in God. I knew that He was the Creator. From songs, I knew that Jesus loved me, and that I wanted to be His sunbeam. From my child's heart, I heard — and I believed. I guess that was enough for then. How precious it was that our pastor-school-bus driver taught us these songs on the long bus ride home each day.

As I began to mature and make connections with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I realized that God is not just a character on the bookshelf. He is alive in our heart. Jesus is "God with us". Through the years, I learned from the Bible to compare stages of spiritual growth to stages of physical growth. To mature physically happens automatically, but to mature spiritually, we have to make a choice to follow Jesus. When we accept Christ as our Saviour, we begin to notice that we progress through spiritual growth as we learn and live God's Word. Have you noticed that progress in your own life?

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, we are grateful that when we search for You, You bring us closer to Yourself. Thank You for letting us know that You love us so. How great You are that Your Holy Spirit teaches us how to have a personal relationship with You through Jesus Christ. Amen.
