Psalm 104:24-28 – O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the sea, great and wide, creeping things innumerable are there, living things both small and great. There go the ships, and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it. These all look to you to give them their food in due season; when you give to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. (NRSV)

Picture a 12-kilometre (7-mile) hike with a 300-metre (1000-foot) drop from start to ocean. It's labelled difficult, and that means for seasoned hikers. Try it with all the camping gear necessary for mom and dad and three kids all under ten. Add in rocky terrain, swamp, and a stretch inhabited by snakes, and you can imagine the "fun" that this family of five had on a blistering hot summer day in Highlands National Park in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Fisherman's Cove is not meant for the weak of heart or body. Besides my large backpack, I carried our youngest for the last couple of kilometres, made necessary by those aforementioned snakes. She also didn't much care for the mounds of droppings from the deer or the more unpleasant piles from the moose either. Yes, it took hours, and the chorus, "Are we there yet?" became louder the farther we went, until …

… until the last zig and zag of the trail brought us to an amazing cove with cliffs on three sides and an opening from the cove to the sea. To our amazement, there was a pod of whales singing to one another and listening to their own echoes off the cliff walls.

Five tiny human beings sank to the ground and listened for an hour without anyone daring to move.

Amazing!

Our evening devotional was simply a sharing of the astounding experience of God's creation, the wonder of the world, and the diversity of life around us.

What wonder awaits in the world around you?

Prayer: O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth! Amen.
