Psalm 104:12 – The birds nest beside the streams and sing among the branches of the trees. (NLT)

Matthew 11:15 – He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. (KJV)

My friend's husband, recently fitted with hearing aids, came through the storage house door, calling with urgency, "Honey, there are birds chirping in my ears. We best call the doctor." Taken aback, his wife said, "Let's go outside and listen." They went outside, and sure enough, the trees across the road were full of chirping birds. The couple, seeing the humour, laughed, praised God, and decided that, yes indeed, the new hearing aids were working as designed.

He needed time to adapt to the sounds around him because his hearing had been greatly diminished for a long time. Now the hearing device brings an auditory blessing to the man, who now hears birds chirping at a distance, the slapping of waves against the sand, and the whisper of the wind.

The soft still voice of the Holy Spirit as it prompts the heart toward obedience requires hearing aids of a different type. Our relationship with God –– Father, Son, and Holy Spirit –– comes best by hearing the Word of God daily. We have spiritual ears that are designed as a channel for God's love and instruction. What a joy it is to listen to Him heart-speak to us in a still, small voice of encouragement each day to move us forward. Hearing God's Word prepares our hearts so that they can meld with Jesus' love for us and cause us to desire that everyone might know the joy that comes to believers who are blessed by the hearing and keeping of God's Word in our lives.

Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to realize and develop this precious gift of hearing that we have been given to increase our faith. May we take the time to listen to the birds and to Your Word each day, so that we take the sounds to heart. We pray that everyone might hear Your voice. Amen.
