Ephesians 1:16-18 – I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints. (NIV)

During the winter months in the north, it gets very dark. In the mornings, it stays dark until 9:30, sometimes 9:45, depending upon the weather. I hate the dark, so I have lots of large windows, as well as lights. I also work best in the early hours and like to get my vacuuming and cleaning done as early as possible. Doing it while it is still dark outside, however, is always a challenge. Even with the lights all on, it never fails that when the sun finally comes up and illuminates my home with its brightness, it also highlights bits and pieces of fluff and dust and hair that I had missed before it shone.

One day, to help alleviate this problem, I decided to buy a new floor lamp. This should make a huge difference during the dark winter months, I thought. And it did. My daughter and I were amazed at how much brighter the living area was during that first winter after my purchase. After a while, however, we found ourselves complaining once again that it was so dark in the living room. We bought a new light, and it is doing its job, but still, our quest is for more light.

This quest for more light, which we go through each winter, has reminded me also of the need always to be seeking more and more enlightenment in regards to knowing God better and better. God is eternal. He is never-ending. This truth means that we can never completely know Him. There will always be more to discover, more to enjoy, more to be contemplating, but only if we keep seeking more spiritual light through prayer, study, fellowship, and obedience. This is a quest which I am determined, as God is my helper, not to forsake.

How about you? Will you join me in continuing to ask that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give us the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that we may know Him better? Will you pray that the eyes of our hearts may be enlightened in order that we may know the hope to which He has called us, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people? Indeed, what a quest that would be, for the results would be limitless from now throughout eternity.

Prayer: Father God, thank You that You answer our prayers when they line up according to Your good and perfect will. The quest to know You better and better is our desire for this day and all the days or our lives. Bless us abundantly, O Lord, as only You can, that more and more people might see You alive and ever-growing in us and desire to be enlightened, too. In Christ's name, we ask. Amen.
