John 3:17 – For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (NIV)

One day when I was little, I found, as the surprise in my popcorn box, a tiny pair of scissors. But how horrible! They would not open. They just sat there in the palm of my hand, a senseless, one-piece thing of cast metal. I felt put-down and disgusted.

One Christmas after I had become an adult, I opened a gift and found a neat little pair of scissors — real scissors that opened and closed and cut beautifully! The gracious and suitable gift removed from me the vexation of the former fake. Jesus had shown me that He remembered and cared to providentially ordain His goodness to me.

I continue to use the real scissors with a sense of victory.

A great sense of victory is ours as we receive the real gifts that Jesus came into the world to give us: His love, His forgiveness of our sins, His joy, His Holy Spirit, His guidance for a life that makes sense, and moreover, His assurance of life forever. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16 NIV).

Prayer: Thank You for victory in Jesus and for assurance of Your everlasting love. And thank You for Your Word, the Bible, that continually assures us that we can be overcomers in Yourself, now and forever. Amen.

        Victory in Jesus

I heard an old, old story,
How a Saviour came from glory,
How He gave his life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me;
I heard about His groaning,
Of His precious blood's atoning.
Then I repented of my sins
And won the victory.

Refrain:
O victory in Jesus,
My Saviour, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him.
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about a mansion
He has built for us in glory.
And I heard about the streets of gold
Beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing,
And about the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I'll sing up there
The song of victory.
       – E.M.
