Last summer, my wife's sister and her husband were here to visit us for a family reunion. They live in a small town in the state of Michigan, USA, and when it was time to depart for their six-hour drive home, we discussed the best way to go. From our area of southern Ontario, Canada, there are basically two fairly direct routes to get to the border point where they would want to enter the state of Michigan. However, on the way home, they wanted to visit a relative who lives somewhere between these two routes. We concluded that although there was one good way from there, it would take them through a very busy tourist area where there would certainly be delays because of the heavy traffic during the summer season.

We discussed the other way southwest from their relative's place with the advantage of avoiding the tourist traffic. They explained that they had tried that route one other time, and they got lost, wasting about two hours finding the right road home. My unintentionally poetic answer was, "The best way to go is the way you know."

Wherever we have to go, it is usually prudent to take the roads that we are familiar with. However, we do have road maps, road signs, and verbal advice, as well as GPS devices and cell phones to show us the way to our destination. If we follow these explicit instructions, we will almost always find our way.

In John 13 and 14, there is a lot of dialogue between Jesus and His disciples about where He is going and how they can find the way to follow Him. He tells them that He is going to His Father's house to prepare a place for them.

John 14:5-6 – Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (NKJV)

There are so many times on our spiritual journey when we are tempted to lose our way in situations which we know are not in accordance with biblical teachings. Then, we are reminded that faith in Jesus is the way that we should follow.

Whether we seek to be in touch with God the Father now as He guides us on the road of life or whether we are expecting to be with Him when our sojourn on earth is over, we are assured through Scripture and faith that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.

Prayer: Our Father in heaven, we are so thankful that through Jesus, You have shown us the way not only to peace on earth but also to the assurance of our heavenly home at the appointed time. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
