Psalm 91:1-2 – Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare of the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. (NLT)

I was fifteen when I went out to work at a farm, far from home, cleaning and cooking for the harvest crews in the wheat fields. I had no knowledge of the facts of life, nor could I have known that the farmer was used to taking advantage of whatever girl was employed in this position when his wife was away.

One night as I was drifting off to sleep, I heard his footsteps on the stairs. At the same time, there came to me one of those spiritual nudges that God gives from time to time to those who love Him. I needed to get down on my knees and pray. As I began, I recited Psalm 91, which I knew by heart.

The door opened behind me as I continued to pray, not looking around as he stood there, watching. Then, without a word, he turned and went back, closing the door behind him. The next day, he complained to his wife about my work. So, she paid me and said that they wouldn't need me anymore.

It took me many years to realize all that I had been spared that night. Since then, whenever I read this psalm, I always remember that God physically rescued me, far from home, even though I had not known enough to be afraid. How different my life would have been if I had not had His protection. These old words promise that when we express our trust and faith, God will always be our refuge, even though we may not be aware of any danger.

Psalm 91:15 – When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. (NLT)

Prayer: Dear loving heavenly Father, we are so grateful for the psalmist who himself met trouble and danger throughout his life, yet praised Your blessings upon him and Your protection for him, time after time. Thank You for all Your centuries of faithfulness and kindness, for these Your promises to us, and for walking with us through the nights and days of the often-unexpected turns of our lives. Though trouble and danger may lie in wait on every side, still we are safe as we abide in Your love. Thank You, too, for teaching us and growing us up in this world so that we may share a renewed understanding with those around us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
