Last week as my husband was vacuuming his bedroom, a gust of wind blew through the open patio door and slammed shut his bedroom door so hard that the pictures on the living room wall on the other side came crashing down. One picture landed on the telephone outlet, and the force of it broke the wire that supplies my high-speed Internet connection. In the blink of an eye, I was shut off and disconnected from the rest of the world. It is truly amazing how much we rely on modern technology.

The other morning, I was looking after my two grandchildren until they had to walk to the corner to catch the school bus. Katen, age ten, was playing a dress-up game on her mother's iPad, and Carter, age seven, was playing a free game that he had installed on my iPad. When I asked them if playing on the iPad is all that they do, Carter replied, "To keep kids occupied, all they need is technology."

I had to chuckle to myself at his answer, but at the same time, I wondered if we are losing the ability to use our spare time wisely. Whatever happened to reading, talking to each other face-to-face (rather than texting), playing outdoor games with our friends, and formulating new and exciting things within our minds?

I have to admit that I'm also at fault. Instead of doing something constructive, I often find myself playing a game on my iPad, which sometimes turns into an hour or two.

I thought about how this is like our Christian walk. If we fail to spend time with our heavenly Father, we break our connection with Him. Yet, it's not God Who breaks the connection; you and I do.

Do you feel all alone and disconnected from God? God can bring you back and lead you in the right direction.

Prayer: Lord God, You formed us so that we can create beauty and do amazing things to help our fellow human beings. Modern technology is wonderful and needed, so long as it is used for the good of mankind. Help us to choose wisely and to discern between the good and the evil. Amen.
