The dictionary defines a role model as a person looked up to by others as an example to be imitated.

There are role models everywhere. Some portray an example of good and some of evil. We look to movie stars, entertainers, famous people, our mothers and fathers, caregivers, and people who bring about much needed changes in this world, as those we could imitate.

Martin Luther King Jr. stated, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice."

Although we may not approve of every action of Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, he does hold some high ideals. On November 26, 2015, he stated, "The future is never certain. It depends on the choices we make today. Compassion, acceptance, and trust; diversity and inclusion — these are the things that have made Canada strong and free. Not just in principle, but in practice. Let us not close our hearts to those in need, or our minds to the knowledge that better is always possible."

In a world that portrays a hunger for peace, let us be bringers of peace. Where people are starving, let us share our abundance. Where there is no fresh water, may we who are knowledgeable set up wells. Where there is sickness and no medicine, let us who are doctors and nurses sacrifice our time to bring relief and healing.

The apostle Paul was very conscious of being a role model:

Philippians 3:17 – Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us. (NASB)

Of course, our highest role model is Jesus. We can always ask ourselves, "What would Jesus do?"

John 13:15 – For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. (NRSV)

1 Peter 2:21 – For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. (NRSV)

As Christians, we are role models as well. Other people are always watching how we act and what we say. To them, we exemplify Christ's life on earth.

John 15:16 – You did not choose Me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He may give to you. (NASB)

Prayer: O Lord our God, equip us to do Your service on earth. Grant us the wisdom and desire to help our brothers and sisters where there is a need. Instill in us a spark that will ignite a fire to bring peace, reconciliation, and relief into this world that we call our home. May Your kingdom arise within each and every one of us. Amen.
