I am so glad that my late husband, a Canadian, loved holidaying in the United Kingdom and Europe. We usually began in England by visiting a Christian couple in Norwich. Every time we went to that city, we always visited the Norwich Cathedral. The cathedral was completed in 1096, and probably took about a hundred years to build. We shall never know the number of workmen who gave their lives that our generation may see the work of their hands.

The ceiling is so high that it is impossible to see that part of the cathedral without possibly lying on the floor. However, this situation has been overcome by mirrors placed on small tables in a slanting position down the main aisle of the cathedral.

One of the main features is the spire; it is so high that it really dwarfs the surrounding buildings. It is thought that the German pilots did not bomb the cathedral because they took their position based upon its steeple as it rose above the surrounding buildings and pierced the mist. Perhaps the moon even aided in its visibility. I like to think that a Christian pilot chose this approach and others just followed. Regardless, this cathedral has brought joy to many people who make it an important part of their visit to the United Kingdom.

Matthew 5:14-16 – You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (NKJV)

Like a cathedral spire rising above the clouds, we are called as Christians to rise above the murk of a society gone morally amok, and point the way to God through righteous living.

May we, like those ancient workmen, add to our generation, under the guidance of His hands, some form of lasting value which will encourage others to seek our Saviour this day and in the days to come.

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, we do not know what this day holds for each of us, but we are confidently resting in Your hands as You direct and guide us. Bless us, heavenly Father, and make us a blessing. We pray in the name of Your Son and our Saviour, Jesus our Lord. Amen.
