My mother was an excellent role model in my life while I was growing up. Despite many difficult challenges, through God's grace, she managed to remain strong and good-natured, exemplifying a genuine faith and passion for Jesus. It wasn't until many years later that I realized that my mom had actually struggled through periods of depression; yet she fervently prayed in every situation. I believe that her good leadership qualities taught me also how to be a survivor by placing my hope and trust in the Lord.

Today's text records the story of the prophet Elijah, who had just had a great victory over the false prophets of Baal. Nevertheless, he, too, experienced fear, loneliness, and depression. Most of us can identify with these same emotions, even after achieving a certain amount of success in our lives. Like Elijah, many of God's people expressed similar feelings throughout the Scriptures.

Subsequently, God tenderly ministered to Elijah during this dark period in his life. He cared for his physical needs by providing him with food and water. He also demonstrated His power in a different way: through a gentle whisper. When Elijah realized that this was a divine revelation, he pulled his cloak over his face and waited patiently for the Lord's guidance.

Jesus knows our troubles and promised that He will not allow us to be tested beyond what we are able to bear. In retrospect, I know that this was true for my mother, and it is true for all of us. Oftentimes, we become distracted when we focus on our immediate circumstances. However, if we will take time to meditate upon God's Word and sit quietly in His presence, we, too, will hear His gentle whisper — a powerful, yet peaceful manifestation of His Spirit.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for even the small ways in which You make Your presence known. Strengthen our spirits, and help us to hear Your still voice as You speak to our hearts. In Jesus' mighty name, we pray. Amen.
