As I look out my window this morning, it is terribly dark, and it is raining buckets. Where is the sun? Lord, why do I feel such darkness? I put the television on and hear about a typhoon storming down on Hawaii and a hurricane coming towards the Florida coast. I recall many hurricanes in my childhood years in Bermuda.

What would it be like to constantly live in darkness — the kind of life without God being present? Does darkness of the spirit describe our society these days? For a Christian, what does spiritual darkness mean? Does it say something to us about being bereft of God's light? If I were to contemplate my life lived in eternal darkness, I would be very uncomfortable, even scared to get up and face the day!

What does the Bible say? I find this encouraging:

1 Peter 2:9 – But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (NIV 2011)

Let us listen carefully to that verse and take courage when facing the darkness around us. Our future here on earth may be dark and full of storms, but He has chosen you and me and calls us into His light — we are His through our faith in His Son Jesus Christ. There is no need to fear the future. Even if the earth becomes dark and void of faith in God, the Lord will keep His people safely in His light.

As I look around these days, I wonder what the future will be like. We may well fear darkness and find our days discouraging, but the Lord has control of our lives as we believe in Him. In Him, we are safe, living in His light. Yes, we may fear the future, expecting storms and wars, but the Lord is in control.

It is true that our world seems darker now. Watching television news these days can be very discouraging. Yes, I trust in the Lord and talk with Him every day as I read these devotionals, but recently, as my foot swells and I have trouble walking, I ask myself what does my future hold? Will I need a walker, or will I land in a wheelchair someday? Do I worry about such an outcome? Not really, because the Lord knows my future, and I can trust Him. Where there is darkness from worry and fear, we can turn it over to the Lord.

Let's you and I talk this over with the Lord.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for Your light that overcomes our fear of darkness. We believe in the light that Jesus brought into the world. He knew great darkness as death circled round Him on the cross. Resurrection light continually beckons us in faith and trust. We join together and give our lives into Your safekeeping, O Lord. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
