I was recently on holiday in London, England, and as I was standing in Paddington Station, I noticed a poster for Transport for London, the city's transit service. Their slogan is "Every Journey Matters". Immediately, I was struck by the ways in which that slogan can be read in a Christian context.

My first reaction was about the word "every". Every person's journey matters to God, even that of the outcast, like Zacchaeus, the short, hated, wealthy tax collector whom Jesus welcomed. Many people, like Zacchaeus, feel small, left out, and unimportant, but their life journey is important to God on a daily basis.

As I thought more about the phrase "Every Journey Matters", it occurred to me that within each of our lives, there are multiple journeys. Certainly, there is our faith journey that we often talk about. There is also an occupational or career journey that takes us through our working life. There are multiple relationship journeys that many of us are on with our spouse or partner, and with family members and friends. There might also be an academic or intellectual journey as we read and study throughout our life. What about all of those journeys?

As I was standing in that train station (and really, what better setting for a conversation with God about a journey?) I believe that the message for me was that we must bring all these journeys — our whole selves — to God.

Luke 10:27a – Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind. (NIV)

We mustn't separate our faith life from the rest of our life. It's easy to think of our faith life as something that happens at church, and that the rest of our life happens elsewhere. But think about that: if we don't commit our work journey to God, our relationship journeys to God, our intellectual journey to God, are we really loving God in the way that Jesus commanded us?

Take some time today to think about all the journeys that you are on. Are you journeying with God?

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for loving us so completely: for loving us at work and at play, at home and at church, and everywhere in between. Please help us to love You completely in return — to love You with our whole selves. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
