The athletes in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games were all about getting the best score possible from the judges. These amazing Olympians all wanted to strive for their PB (personal best). Runners, for example, want the lowest time. They want to be first across the finish line.

Every competitor wants to perform perfectly. The athletes train — year in, year out. They listen to their coaches and trust them as they push them and help them to hone their skills. Only their best will do. Some of these incredible young people attain perfection in stupefying, stupendous, and satisfying ways.

Like a good coach, the book of Psalms is a treasure trove of all things good, right, and perfect. Many, indeed all, of the individual psalms encourage, challenge, inspire, and help in our daily life as they relate to our mind, body, and soul.

Psalm 19:7 – The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. (NIV)

Imagine the many ways that we can be perfected as we look to God's training manual, the Bible! The psalmist relied on the law of the Lord (much more than the Ten Commandments) to revive and energize the soul.

In addition, the psalmist wanted his readers to know that God's decrees, statutes, and precepts are perfectly trustworthy. God's Word, like a good coach, will bestow His wisdom upon us. What a privilege to have God's perfect law as our coach in life!

While some of us may never qualify for the Olympics, we can be assured of revived souls and maturing attitudes in our daily walk with the Lord as we trust and apply His Word today and every day.

Prayer: Eternal God, highest in the heavens, You are the all-wise, all-knowing Creator. Only You can help us excel as we long to revive our souls with Your trustworthy statutes. May we — body, soul, and spirit — be Olympians in Your sight, as we look up to and embrace Your perfect guidance and wisdom for life as revealed in the holy Bible. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
