Psalm 62:6 – He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. (NKJV)

One of the places that we visited on our cruise last February and March did not have a large enough harbour to accommodate our ship. So we dropped anchor offshore, and then, people were taken to the shore in small boats. We stayed on board at this particular port. By looking at the land in the distance, we could see that, though we were anchored, our ship was shifting location as the wind and the tide caused it to move. Sometimes, one side of the ship would face the shore, then later the other, moving back and forth with the conditions at sea.

Is that not the way it is with us so often in life? Our emotional and spiritual direction will shift with the winds of fortune or disaster; we will be tossed around by uncertain thoughts and ideas; and even more, we drift away from the beliefs and moral standards that we have been taught and practised in the past. These days, our society seems to be drifting aimlessly. We all need an anchor to hold us in place.

Ephesians 4:14 – We should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting. (NKJV)

James 1:6b – He who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. (NKJV)

The one thing that we can count on to keep us steady in this shifting world is the Word of God, which never changes.

Isaiah 40:8 – The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever. (NKJV)

Even though our circumstances are constantly shifting unpredictably, if we are anchored to the Word, we will not drift.

Hebrews 6:19a – This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast. (NKJV)

Whatever storm we find ourselves in,

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Saviour's love.
       – Priscilla Jane Owens

Prayer: Our Father in heaven, we thank You for Your Word and the assurance that during the storms of life, we can count on Your promises that You will keep us safe and secure. We thank You in Jesus' holy name. Amen.
