Can you imagine the sorrow that Florida is feeling as they go through an epidemic of violence? Do you recall the promising young singer shot, the mass shootings at a nightclub, and a two-year-old child snatched by an alligator in a lagoon?

In the face of torrential sorrow, what can be said or done? Sometimes, nothing can help to take away the hurt, the vice-grip of sorrow. It is a fact that grief is as real a pain as a broken limb or the aftermath of major surgery.

Is there anything that can be done? Yes, there are some things that will help. First and foremost, prayer is the one thing that we can and should engage in. Prayer changes things — at many levels. Prayer is the fuel that propels heaven to act. We've all seen or heard how things change after people take the time to pray.

Jesus prayed. The gospel accounts often record that Jesus prayed, especially early in the morning.

Besides prayer, we can come alongside someone and appropriately read some wonderful, comforting verses of Scripture. You'll know that the time is right when the Holy Spirit guides you to read some of the verses that have been found to be soothing for a sorrowful soul.

When you are experiencing a wounded soul or you know someone who is grieving, try these Bible verses:

John 14:27 – Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (NKJV)

1 Peter 5:7 – Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. (NKJV)

Isaiah 41:10 – Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. (NKJV)

Prayer: Loving God and precious Father, we bring to You all our hurt, sadness, and sorrow. We pray for comfort. Gracious Lord, we pray for others who hurt just like we do, or more, and we ask You to be their comfort even as You comfort us. We pray in the soothing name of Christ our Lord. Amen.
