1 Corinthians 1:27b – God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. (NIV)

I nearly stepped on the little thing before I saw it: A tiny butterfly, the size of the end of my thumb with markings similar to the monarch butterfly, sat on the pink clover.

Because I don't want to trip on the rough ground of The Trail while walking my dog, I have to keep one eye on the ground and one ahead of me — no small feat, I assure you.

A few steps further along, I spotted an even smaller pale white moth with a single black dot on each wing, sitting in the middle of a lovely daisy. It was so tiny and blended in with the whiteness of the petals that I nearly missed it. But suddenly, it struck me that these little insects are not as insignificant as many might think. In that moment, God reminded me that both of these tiny creatures play a very important role in His plans. Without the countless small flying insects continually flitting from flower to flower, the process of pollination for many plants would be slowed to a crawl and eventually come to a halt. This would have a negative effect on plant reproduction, and on the economy and success of the whole world.

As I pondered the far-reaching ramifications of this thought, I realized what a great truth it illustrated for us, His children. Most of us do not see our lives as contributing anything earth-shaking to the overall scheme of God's plans. But the fact is that we each have an important role to play. We are all part of the body of Christ, be that part an eye or an eyelash.

Romans 12:4-6a – Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. (NIV)

Each of us has been placed here with a definite responsibility or role in the ongoing drama called life — and the roles must merge in order to complete the drama.

The heavenly Father is both author and director of the drama. He may assign us to a leading role or a bit part — but we must always keep in mind that without the bit parts, the whole presentation would fall apart.

We have each been honoured to be included in His grand production through being chosen in Christ. Let each of us accept our role with gratitude and humility, and strive with the guidance and strength of the Holy Spirit to obey His direction and honour His confidence in us.

Prayer: Every day, You reveal new truths to us, Lord, if we commit our entire beings to Your leading. Help us to be conscious of that fact. May each breath that we take and each step that we make reflect our gratitude to You and our trust in You as our heavenly teacher and divine director. Amen.
