Psalm 119:103-105 – How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. (NIV)

I belong to a number of online websites designed to assist a person in finding good books to read. Goodreads promotes the work of writers and sells their books, but also offers a reading challenge to encourage its members to get serious about reading books. They can post the target number of books that they want to read during the year and plot their progress towards their goal. Goodreads knows that most people need a reading plan. Otherwise they would go helter-skelter as they pick the next book and not buy the promoted books.

This tendency goes double for Bible reading. We need an encouragement to read our Bibles daily. There are a great number of Bible reading plans available to people today. The PresbyCan Daily Devotional suggests two different plans which are found on this page. Both are excellent encouragements.

Bible study surprises us with unexpected blessings when we don't hopscotch around the books looking for something that strikes our fancy. As soon as we read the Bible through, we can begin again. By doing this, God can focus our attention on the things that we would benefit from reading.

My personal plan involves reading in the morning at the breakfast hour. I listen to the passage on my Kindle as I eat and reread the section afterward. Often I'll highlight or make notes. As I read, I stop to pray for people or issues that the Lord brings to mind, or I might write a devotional. Since my favourite books are the Psalms, the accounts of Christ's life, and Paul's books, if I didn't have a reading plan, I'd read only these books without looking at the others, and I'd miss valuable lessons.

So here's your challenge: pick one of the Bible reading plans listed on this page, and aim to read through your Bible in a year or two.

Prayer: Lord God, open our eyes as we read, that we may see Your Word for us. Open our ears as we hear Your Scriptures, so that we may listen and obey in Jesus' name. Amen.
