His eyes never leave me. He follows my every movement. Wherever I go, he quickly moves out ahead of me and keeps checking to see if I am following after him. All of this takes place because he loves me.

He is my dog, Sparky.

One day, I had an amazing thought. It suddenly dawned on me that this continual surveillance was a graphic illustration of a wonderful truth.

Genesis 16:13 – [Hagar] gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: "You are the God who sees me," for she said, "I have now seen the One who sees me." (NIV)

God's eyes are also always on me. He watches my every movement and walks ahead of me wherever I go, continually checking to be sure that I am following Him. And all of this takes place because He loves me — and all of us — and He has promised always to be with us and guide us.

Psalm 32:8 – I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. (NKJV)

In no way is this comparison intended to trivialize our Father's continual watchfulness and guidance. On the contrary, it has heightened my awareness of His loving presence, which on more than one occasion I have taken for granted. I am so grateful that He uses such small things to remind me of His constant care and His countless promises.

Sometimes, we forget what a rich bank of promises to which we have access in the Word of God, as well as the leading of the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit Who lives in us. When we try to deal with problems on our own, we often become frustrated and discouraged if things don't work out. It is then that we need to remember His promise that He is always with us to lead us in the way we should go, if we will only seek His direction.

Today, I thank God for these precious truths, which He states over and over again in His Word. I am so grateful that He used my precious companion, Sparky, to remind me of how very blessed I am.

Prayer: Help us, O Lord, to be still and know that You are God and that You are always only a breath away. Help us to read Your Word carefully and to listen for Your promised leading. Also, help us to remember that nothing is too small for You to use in order to teach us new truths. Amen.
