Have you switched yet? Studies suggest that whole grain breads are healthier than the white, doughy stuff our mothers used for our lunches. It includes the whole grain, not just bits left over from the milling process.

You may have covered this in 4-H or health class. Each kernel of grain includes:

1. Bran (I can hear you now!) – Bran is fibre, but also includes antioxidants and vitamins.

2. Endosperm – the inner part; has protein, carbs, some vitamins and minerals.

3. Germ – sprouts the new plant; high in vitamins B and E; also has bits of mineral, antioxidants, and essential fats (Yes, you heard right — essential fats).

With bran and germ removed, nothing remains but white flour. Iron and B vitamins must be added back into the flour.

Some of us live or worship in white bread communities where folks around us look just like us. If someone with a different skin colour or maybe a disability shows up, we panic. What if they are bran or germ? What if they bring more friends that look like them? Oh, my goodness. We'll be whole grain!

It will be good for us and for them, too. We'll have the opportunity to share Christ with them, and they will enrich our community with their gifts. Then we will truly be whole grain.

1 Corinthians 10:17 – For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. (KJV)

1 Corinthians 12:12-13 – For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. (KJV)

Prayer: Lord, may we never think or act as though our colour, ability, size, or anything else is better than another's. For Christ, who died for us all. Amen.
