I'll never forget the days when our two children were born and then the day our grandson arrived. The birth of a child is always a very special occasion. But the birth of the Child Who came at Christmas is good news for each and every one of us.

Good News:

In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see — I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is the Messiah, the Lord. (Luke 2:8-11 NRSV)

A Saviour was born. He was:

The perfect Son of God.
King of kings and Lord of lords.
Emmanuel — God with us.

Angels sang:

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!" (Luke 2:13-14 NRSV)

Shepherds adored:

The shepherds were the first ones to hear the good news and they believed the message.

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us," So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in a manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. (Luke 2:15-18,20 NRSV)

Wise men brought gifts:

The wise men saw the sign — the star in the East — and they went to worship the newborn King. They fell down and worshipped Him and presented their gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

The greatest gift ever given:

God's gift to humankind — the gift of His own dear Son, Jesus, to be the Saviour of the world.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16 NKJV)

Christmas is a time to give and to receive:

God has done His part — He loved us, and He gave us His Son.

What can we do?

Like the angels, we can lift His name on high and sing His praises: "Glory to God in the highest!"

Like the shepherds, we can come and adore Him, and then go and tell others.

Like the wise men, we can give the gift of ourselves to Him Who loved us and gave His life for us.

Will you do your part? Will you accept the message and believe in the Saviour? Will you welcome the holy Child into your heart and life this Christmas season?

Prayer: Holy God, You have come to be with us, to make our hearts Your home. This is the good news of Christmas. You are the only One Whom we will worship and adore as we celebrate the wondrous birth of Your most precious gift: Your own dear Son, Jesus. In His name, we pray. Amen.
