Psalm 40:4 – Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods. (NIV)

Often, I stop for a cup of fresh coffee in a nice café. So it was the other day for such a treat. It was a slow day with only a few customers in conversation, some about fashion, some about sports, others about education, and some I could not hear.

My thoughts took off, and I imagined the men of the Old and New Testaments walking in among today's people: what would they say to us? What would Moses, Aaron, Joshua, Jonah, or King David say to us? What would Jeremiah's message be? Whose table would they visit first? Would a lone one be visited by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John? Would we welcome them to our table?

Then I pictured myself in those days in the marketplace, or at the seashore buying fish, or just on my way from one place to another, drawn to listen to the evangelists speaking outdoors about Jesus Christ who had come to bring salvation to lost souls. Would I get the message deep down? Would I be hungry to hear more about this Jesus? Would the message hit home and my mouth confess this Jesus to be my Saviour?

My image of the powerful men of the Bible was so vivid that I just sat there as if living in another time and world. The men of the Bible changed the world. Jesus Christ changed everything that needed a change. In Him, we have grace and peace from God. Jesus took upon Himself our sins, and His death finished His redeeming work that pleased God the Father. Nothing else would work for our sinfulness. Christ, the sacrificial Lamb of God, worked out what was impossible for us sinful beings.

In God's Word, we are never alone. A whole host of Bible people are camped around us, giving us wisdom to trust in God. The Lord be exalted! He is pleased to be with us and for us!

As I sat there at the table awakening to my surroundings, I wondered how we are working out our walk with God. Are we willing to be directed and guided by God in our steps and plans, even though we might be led into a lonely place in this busy world with all its worldly conversations?

I said a silent prayer that the Lord would work in some way in the lives of the people around me, and left, thankful for this moment of past, present, and future.

Prayer: God Almighty, Maker of people of the past, present, and future, You call us to Your kingdom through Jesus Christ, Your beloved Son, our Saviour and Lord. You have lifted us up from our sin to Your presence in glory, to be Your own people, and to live as members of Your body with You forever. Thank You, in Jesus name. Amen!
