Psalm 18:9-10 – He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. (NIV)

Psalm 91:4 – He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. (NIV)

A few weeks ago, my husband and I saw two adorable fledglings in our neighbour's back yard. Their nest was built on top of a ladder that was located under his grapevine trellis. While we were admiring the baby birds, two robins, not far from the nest, were looking straight at us. They became very vocal as if they were yelling at us. It was obvious that they did not approve of our presence near their babies. Our neighbour, however, did not heed the warning and got closer to the nest, causing the little birds to fly away. At that point, both mother and father became very aggressive, swooping down in an effort to drive us out of their territory. I have never seen this type of behaviour in birds before. It was quite fascinating — an experience I shall not soon forget.

It is amazing how many things in nature provide the most interesting spiritual lessons. The event in my neighbour's yard reminded me of today's Scripture verses, particularly Psalm 18, which is especially meaningful to me. Whenever I hear it, it brings back memories of a time during a difficult family situation, when I prayed and opened the Bible right to that psalm, and it felt as if the Lord were speaking directly to me. Shortly after that, the major problem was resolved. In those circumstances, I understood what David meant in the way that he described the Lord's swift action in his defense. The idea of the Almighty parting the heavens with thick clouds under His feet and riding on the wings of the wind suddenly became very real. God was in the midst of my storm, and within days, my problems were resolved.

Miraculous solutions like this don't always happen, and many times, our prayers do not receive the "Yes" answer that we would like. Nevertheless, like the robins protecting their young from danger, we do believe that the Lord is always near to those who trust in Him. It is comforting to know that He is always looking out for His children.

Prayer: Lord, according to Your Word, keep us safe under the shadow of Your wings. Watch over us day and night as we commit ourselves to Your perfect care. We ask this in Jesus' holy name. Amen.
