The dictionary defines a hero as a person who is admired for courage or noble qualities.

A hero is also someone who does something without thinking of themselves, without thinking of getting a reward. It is someone who is willing to put themselves at risk for the sake of someone else.

There are a lot of movies about heroes these days, particularly superheroes battling the forces of evil. As I write this, the top rating movie is The Avengers. It is about a team of superheroes consisting of Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Hawkeye, who join together to help save the earth from Loki and his army (the bad guys).

We have modern-day heroes like our firefighters, who put their lives at risk every time they answer a call to put out a fire or battle a forest fire. Policemen and policewomen put their lives at risk whenever they stop a speeding car or come to the aid of a domestic disturbance. There are men and women in the army, navy, and air force, who put their lives at risk as they try to bring peace in a war-torn country and who protect us.

Every year on November 11th, people in Canada and many other nations pause in a moment of silence to remember the men and women who have served and continue to serve their country during times of war and conflict, and as peacemakers. These men and women are true heroes, many of whom gave their lives and their futures so that we may live in peace.

Yet, the greatest hero of all time is our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, who gave up His life for us (the bad guys and gals) so that we could become good guys and gals and live with Him forever.

John 3:16-17 – For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. (NASB)

Prayer: Thank You, Father, for sacrificing Your Son, Jesus, to die on a cross for us. Jesus, who was perfect in every way, sacrificed Himself for us who are not perfect, so that we may receive eternal life. Amen.
