Job 10:12 – You gave me life and showed me kindness, and in your providence watched over my spirit. (NIV)

On a sunny spring afternoon a few years ago, I took a drive around my new neighbourhood, on roads unfamiliar to a newcomer. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my outing in the farm country where more fields opened to the view, with farm houses a distance away, each with a long driveway. I purposely kept exploring the county roads, not knowing where I was, when I came to a stop sign: "Road ends". At such an end of the road, one has no other way but to turn back.

In our spiritual life, we might have been at the dead end of the road — caught in our sin, like the Bible says: "We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way." (Isaiah 53:6a NIV) The best option then is a U-turn: "Repent then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord." (Acts 3:19 NIV)

I thought of the many roads connected to each other and how locals would know to take all the right turns to get home. Many were the ways I drove about, even to the point of getting lost. There were signs when the road would take a curve, or a narrow bridge was ahead, or a side road or a bump ahead — just like life can be.

I compared my outing to the spiritual way. We have been given God's Word as our guide and compass to connect and lead us to His way and will. Trying our own aimless way leads us away from God. His way is the right and more excellent way to follow.

When the Spirit of God convicts us and when we agree with God that the Bible is true, we will be happy and blessed to be cleansed by the sacred blood of Jesus who is The Way.

"Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered." (Psalm 32:1 NIV) Jesus walked that road for us to His death, covering our sins on the cross. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6 NIV) To get on that Way is by faith — faith that takes us home.

Prayer: Our Lord and God, thank You for the more excellent Way that Your love has provided in Your Son Jesus Christ. Amen.
