Hebrews 11:1 – Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. (NLT)

Hebrews 12:1b-2 – Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (NKJV)

Hebrews 7:25 – Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. (NKJV)

A landscape architect of my acquaintance envisions outdoor sport and recreation facilities, then draws plans so that others can build what he sees as possible. He supervises construction in the role of project leader while project managers and contractors call forth from his pictures the details of the real thing.

Once, I heard hope described as a blueprint, and faith as the everyday actions we take to see hope fulfilled.

My hope is Jesus Christ.

The architect of my faith is Jesus Christ. When I read Old Testament prophecy and New Testament gospel accounts, I find word pictures of what He makes possible. When I read New Testament epistles, I find word pictures about where He is now and what He is doing.

Since becoming a pensioner, seeking direction for my life in a new season, and using the blueprint/construction metaphor, I read Scripture word pictures about Christ, while desiring my own "blueprint". For example, I see "compassion" as a person when I read this way.

A few weeks ago in a sermon, our minister suggested that we begin to ask, "Jesus, what are you doing right here, right now, by Your Holy Spirit?", and then listen with our hearts. Because I had begun to make mental pictures, I was not surprised when I began to "hear".

Here is a sample of the Holy Spirit's prompts that I have felt in response to the question, "Jesus, what are you doing right here, right now?"

"As you enjoy your walk, please join Me in a prayer of comfort for your neighbour."
"Let's praise the Father this morning."
"Please take the writing course you have put off for years."
"Remember your absent prodigals; ask Me for reconciliation. Intercede daily."

This approach to Scripture and prayer is working for me. Would you join me in this joyous adventure of seeing and hearing by faith?

Prayer: Father, You promise, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." (Hebrews 13:5 NKJV) Teach us ways to know and live in Your truth and love. In the sweet name of Christ Jesus our Lord, we ask. Amen.
