Have you ever wondered what true freedom really is? The dictionary defines it as the power to do what we want to do and to go where we want to go without being controlled; not being a slave or prisoner; not having or being affected by something unpleasant, painful, or unwanted; and not being weighed down by care, pain, sickness, fear, or responsibility.

Jesus has a different definition of freedom:

John 8:34,36 – Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. (NIV)

So those who receive Jesus already have that wonderful promise of freedom. All we have to do is accept it and believe it.

Galatians 5:1 – It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (NIV)

We have nothing to be afraid of:

Isaiah 41:13 – For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. (NIV)

We are free to make our own decisions without being judged:

Colossians 2:16 – Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. (NIV)

We do not have to be afraid of pain or death:

Revelation 21:4 – He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. (NIV)

To trust in God and His promises is total freedom. And because we have this freedom, we need to tell others about it:

Luke 4:18 – The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed. (NIV)

Prayer: Righteous God, we thank You for sacrificing Your Son, Jesus, for us, in order that we may obtain total freedom. Help us to share that freedom with others. Amen.
