Isaiah 35:5-6a – Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the dumb sing. (NKJV)

This verse causes me to remember how God answered our pleas regarding our son's inability to talk. He was born brain-damaged after being starved for oxygen before birth. At age six when he entered special education classes, he still had fewer than a dozen words that anyone could understand. How we beseeched God to heal our tongue-tied boy!

One day, I received a phone call from the school's speech therapist. She informed us that she thought our son had a form of cerebral palsy which made it impossible for the necessary muscles for speech to work correctly. In essence, he was what had been known as being "dumb". She suggested a regimen of physical therapy exercises for him, most of which were fun! He got to lick peanut butter off tongue depressors, suck down milkshakes, and play "Simon says", over and over again, by touching the tip of his tongue first toward his left cheek, then the right, his nose, and then his chin. How he giggled! Within a year, he began adding words to his vocabulary as he was able to make his tongue obey his mind. Today at age 44, we can't get him to stop chattering, and in church, he sings! To others it may sound like a growl, but in heaven his praise resounds like an opera singer.

Psalm 100:1-2 – Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. (NIV)

Psalm 95:2 – Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. (KJV)

So, for those who claim that they cannot carry a tune in a bucket, God never said anything about singing on key — but simply making a joyful noise! As we rejoice in church, or even as we wash the dishes, let's sing out joyfully, because God has enabled us to do so and because He commanded it! Such a simple thing is singing, yet how hard for people born without the ability to get their tongues to form words, or for those who cannot hear the notes and words! How I thank God for healing my son and giving him the ability to sing God's praises!

Prayer: Lord God, we join our own songs to angel praises. Thank You for enabling us to speak and sing of Your blessings, for we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
