Psalm 139:4 – Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely. (NRSV)

Knitting has been one of my hobbies, and although I'm not an expert, knitted items for family and friends are especially found under the Christmas tree.

I keep an eye on the rows so that the pattern stays uniform in all the knits and purls. If even one is misplaced, the whole work becomes distorted. I have had to undo my work all the way back to that spot and begin again.

I think of God as the master knitter who does not make mistakes, nor do His hands craft error. I think of God inspecting His work in a variety of ways.

Patiently, He uncovers the words we speak and the work our sins have made, bringing to light the errors of our ways.

God sees all the knits and purls that we stitch together during our day. He sees the rows that distort the image and ruin the work at hand.

By the grace of God, we can begin anew every day. We succeed only because of His abundant mercy and grace. God's love is at work, and His love is working for our benefit. In Christ Jesus, we are mended to the last error.

It is God's will to take away the sin of the world. Jesus the Christ came to die to fulfil that will.

It is for us to be redeemed under the watchful eyes of the Master, to surrender our way and will to become the missing pieces in God's masterpiece, the glorious result of the cross of Christ.

John 8:31-32 – Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." (NRSV)

Prayer: God of love, have mercy. Work Your pattern into our lives. Pick up the lost stitches and correct the rows that we so often mess up. When we go against Your will, show us Your way. When we want our own way, show us Your will. Help us to be of the pattern that is Your masterpiece. Amen.
